About Braintree

Braintree, a PayPal company, is a global payment gateway offering cards, PayPal, Venmo and digital wallets.

What Braintree supports

Card payments via Braintree (a PayPal service) with a hosted Drop-in checkout.

  • Payment methods: Cards, PayPal, Venmo, Apple Pay, Google Pay
  • Where it works: 45+ countries
  • Billing: one-off payments
  • Price: free for every PremiumPress member

Setting up Braintree in PremiumPress

Activate the free plugin, then open your theme’s payment settings and add your Braintree credentials:

  • Merchant ID — Braintree Control Panel → Settings → API → your merchant ID.
  • Public key
  • Private key
  • Tokenization key — Used to initialise Drop-in on the checkout page. Control Panel → Settings → API → Tokenization Keys.

The card is tokenised on a hosted Drop-in page, then charged server-side. Subscriptions (Braintree recurring billing) are not enabled in this flow — use a one-time plan with Braintree. The plugin requires PremiumPress 12.

Braintree plugin FAQ

What do I need to set up Braintree in WordPress?

You'll need a Braintree account and its Merchant ID, Public key, Private key and Tokenization key, which you enter in your PremiumPress theme's payment settings. The plugin itself is free for members.

Does Braintree support recurring subscriptions?

Braintree handles one-off payments in PremiumPress. If you need recurring billing, choose a gateway shown under the Subscriptions filter on the plugins page.

How does the Braintree checkout work?

A hosted Drop-in checkout page tokenises the card, then the server runs a transaction sale and verifies it via the Braintree API.
