How to Build an Etsy-Style Marketplace on WordPress: Dokan vs WCFM vs a Multi-Vendor Theme

An Etsy-style site is not a shop. It is a marketplace: many sellers, each with their own products and shopfront, and you in the middle taking a commission. On WordPress that changes the question from "which theme" to "which marketplace engine", because a normal WooCommerce theme cannot do it alone.

There are three ways to build one. The two most common are WooCommerce plus a multi-vendor plugin, Dokan or WCFM Marketplace, with a compatible theme on top. The third is a theme with seller accounts built in, such as the PremiumPress Classifieds Theme, which skips WooCommerce entirely. One mix-up to clear up first, because it is the most common: a shop theme is not a marketplace, and that includes ours. What an Etsy-style marketplace needs

Four things separate a marketplace from a shop. Sellers must be able to register and manage their own products from the front end without seeing your admin. Each seller needs a shopfront page and search that filters by seller. Payments must be split, so the seller is paid and you keep a commission, either automatically through the gateway or by periodic payouts. And you need the moderation tools: approving sellers, approving products, handling refunds.

All three routes below do those four things, though they split the money differently: the WooCommerce routes lean on gateway split payments or paid add-ons, while the Classifieds Theme holds the seller's share and pays it out from a ledger in your admin. The rest of the difference is in how much you assemble yourself, what the paid tiers unlock, and what the first year costs.

Dokan

Dokan is the most widely used multi-vendor plugin for WooCommerce, and the one most guides assume. Sellers get a front-end dashboard, their own store page, and product, order and coupon management. Commission rules, withdrawals and seller verification are on the paid tiers, and it works with the popular WooCommerce themes including WoodMart and Flatsome.

It requires WooCommerce. The Lite version is free with unlimited vendors and the front-end dashboard. Paid plans are yearly: Starter at $149 for one site, Professional at $249 for three, Business at $499 for five and Enterprise at $999 for twenty, with lifetime options at higher prices. weDevs states more than 50,000 customers.

WCFM Marketplace

WCFM Marketplace is the feature-dense free alternative to Dokan. Its free core includes a lot that Dokan reserves for paid tiers, and it adds paid add-ons for the rest: the Ultimate add-on for advanced seller features, groups and staff, and others. It is the route people take when they want the most marketplace features per dollar and do not mind a busier interface.

It requires WooCommerce 7 or later. The core plugin is free with more than 10,000 active installs and a 4.6 rating from 448 reviews on WordPress.org, last updated 30 August 2026. Paid add-ons are licensed separately on the WC Lovers site.

PremiumPress Classifieds Theme

Final Thoughts: which route for an Etsy-style site?

Dokan if you want the most proven WooCommerce marketplace and are happy to budget $149 a year or more for commissions and payouts, plus a theme and a payments extension.

WCFM Marketplace if you want the most features for the least money on WooCommerce and can live with a busier interface.

PremiumPress Classifieds Theme if you want seller accounts, commission and escrow in one $99 purchase with nothing else to install and no yearly plan, and you do not need the depth of Dokan's enterprise tiers. And if it turns out you are the only seller, skip the marketplace question altogether: a single-owner store is cheaper to run and far less to moderate.
