Astra vs Kadence for a WooCommerce Store in 2026, and When Neither Is the Answer
By Mark Fail · · Updated

Astra and Kadence are the two free themes that come up in almost every "which theme for my WooCommerce store" conversation, and they are the two that AI assistants recommend first. They are more alike than different: both are fast, both are free on WordPress.org, both work with WooCommerce, and both sell paid tiers that add the shop features the free versions leave to plugins.
This comparison puts the real numbers side by side, explains where each one wins, and covers the two cases where neither is the right answer: a store that wants a dedicated WooCommerce theme such as WoodMart, and a store that does not want WooCommerce at all. Every figure was checked on 10 September 2026 against the vendor's own page, and the sources are listed at the end.
Astra vs Kadence at a glance
| Theme | Free version | Paid tiers | Shop features in the theme | Needs WooCommerce | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Astra | 1M+ installs, 4.9 (6,524 reviews) | Astra Pro, priced on wpastra.com | Basic in free; more in Pro | Yes (or SureCart) | Fast, simple stores with many templates |
| Kadence | 500K+ installs, 4.9 (453 reviews) | $99 / $299 / $499 per year, per site | Shop Kit on the $299 Pro tier | Yes | Block-editor stores wanting upsells and bundles |
| WoodMart | None | $69, 1 site | Wishlist, compare, discounts, cart recovery | Yes | A dedicated WooCommerce theme |
| PremiumPress Shop | None | $99 one-time, unlimited | Cart, checkout, tax, shipping, 30+ gateways | No | A shop without WooCommerce |
Install counts and ratings are from WordPress.org for the free themes and ThemeForest for WoodMart.
Astra

Astra's strength is reach. It is one of the most installed themes on WordPress, it ships hundreds of starter templates including many shops, and it is compatible with WooCommerce and with SureCart, which matters if you later decide to leave WooCommerce. The free version handles a WooCommerce store perfectly well; Pro adds store-specific options such as gallery layouts and cart behaviour.
On WordPress.org Astra reports over a million active installs, twice Kadence's figure, and 6,524 reviews averaging 4.9; its last update landed on 8 September 2026. We have not quoted Astra Pro's price because it moves with promotions; check it on the Astra site.
Pros
- Largest install base and the most tutorials
- Hundreds of starter templates
- Works with WooCommerce and SureCart
- Lightweight and quick
Cons
- Store features mostly live in WooCommerce and Pro, not the free theme
- Generic look until customised
- Some WordPress.org reviewers report updates breaking their sites
- Still needs a payments extension and other plugins
Kadence

Kadence's strength is the block editor and its Shop Kit. If you build with Gutenberg rather than Elementor, Kadence's blocks and header builder are the more natural fit, and the paid Shop Kit adds cart and checkout optimisation, attribute swatches, product galleries, upsells, cross-sells, order bumps, volume pricing, bundles and discount codes without separate plugins.
Kadence matches Astra's 4.9 average on WordPress.org, from a much smaller 453 reviews and 500,000-plus installs, with its latest update on 24 July 2026. Unlike Astra it publishes fixed per-site prices: $99 a year for Essentials with ShopKit Core, $299 for Pro with the complete Shop Kit, $499 for Elite.
Pros
- Best block-editor experience of the two
- Shop Kit replaces several conversion plugins
- Fast and well maintained
- Good store starter templates
Cons
- The full Shop Kit is on the $299-a-year tier
- Paid plans are per site and renew yearly
- Smaller community than Astra
- The block workflow can feel disjointed if you come from Divi or Elementor
When neither is the answer: WoodMart

Astra and Kadence are general-purpose themes that happen to be good at shops. If the store is the whole site, a dedicated WooCommerce theme gives you more out of the box. WoodMart bundles wishlist, product compare, dynamic discounts and abandoned-cart recovery, plus more than 100 demo stores, and works with Elementor, WPBakery and the block editor.
Compared with a free theme plus a $299 Kadence plan, WoodMart is a single $69 ThemeForest purchase for one store, with no yearly fee for the features themselves. It still runs on WooCommerce, and its 4.91 average across roughly 3,700 reviews is the best rating in this comparison.
Pros
- Shop features included that Astra and Kadence leave to plugins or paid tiers
- Highest rating in this comparison
- 100+ store demos
- Works with the page builder you already use
Cons
- $69 per site, no free version
- Heavier than either free theme
- More settings to learn
- Still needs WooCommerce and a payments extension
When neither is the answer: PremiumPress Shop Theme

The other case is not wanting WooCommerce. PremiumPress Shop Theme is a $99 one-time WordPress theme with the shopping cart, checkout, tax, shipping, stock control and 30 or more payment gateways built in, so no WooCommerce or extra ecommerce plugins are needed. Where Astra and Kadence are the design on top of WooCommerce, this is the design and the shop engine in one.
Set against Astra and Kadence, the difference is where the shop features come from: here they are in the theme, not in WooCommerce or a paid tier, so there is no Shop Kit to subscribe to. One $99 payment covers every store you own, and there is no fee on sales. The trade is the ecosystem: Astra and Kadence share WooCommerce's thousands of extensions, this theme has only its own features and 7 public reviews so far.
Pros
- Nothing else to install to start selling
- $99 once, unlimited stores, 0% fees
- Physical, digital, subscription and multi-vendor selling included
- AI store builder and 10-day refund
Cons
- Outside the WooCommerce ecosystem, so its extensions do not apply
- Very few public reviews
- Plainer default design than WoodMart until customised
- Updates after six months are optional at $49 per six months
Final Thoughts: Astra or Kadence?
Choose Astra if you want the biggest community, the most templates, and the option to run SureCart instead of WooCommerce later. It is the safer default for a first store.
Choose Kadence if you build in the block editor and will pay for the Pro tier, because the Shop Kit's upsells, bundles and swatches replace plugins you would otherwise buy.
Choose WoodMart instead if the store is the whole site and you want wishlist, compare and discounts included for $69.
Choose PremiumPress Shop Theme instead if you would rather not run WooCommerce at all, and want one $99 purchase with the cart, checkout and 30 or more gateways built in.
